This sixth edition of Heptinstall's Pathology of the Kidney has the most dramatic and substantive changes in content of any new edition of this preeminent book on kidney diseases. Yet, still at the core of this edition is the bedrock foundation established by Robert H. Heptinstall, who edited and to a substantial degree authored the first four editions of this classic text. The sixth edition is in essence the 40th anniversary edition of this monumental and comprehensive work, which was first published in 1966.
Since the fifth edition, published in 1998, there have been extraordinary advances in the understanding of the molecular and cellular basis for many kidney diseases, in the knowledge of pathologic and clinical manifestations of kidney diseases, and in the utilization of pathologic findings for directing new and better treatment of kidney diseases. The text of the sixth edition has been extensively modified to include authoritative, thoroughly referenced discussions of these remarkable new advances. Another striking and extremely valuable change in this edition is the transition to color photomicrographs that are even more informative than the traditionally excellent images that have been a hallmark of previous editions.
In his preface to the third edition, Dr. Heptinstall wisely noted that the “two main ingredients for writing a successful medical book are personal experience and an ability to discern what is important in the writing of others.” The 36 authors who contributed to the sixth edition fulfill these criteria admirably. They are among the most capable and accomplished renal pathologists in the world. All of these authors have extensive hands-on experience with diagnostic renal pathology, teaching renal pathology at major medical centers, and advancing the field through clinical and translational research. They have contributed thousands of articles to the literature on renal pathology. In fact, many of the major advances in our current understanding of renal pathology have been made by authors of chapters in this book.
The sixth edition of Heptinstall's Pathology of the Kidney is the most comprehensive, most authoritative, most thoroughly referenced, and best illustrated book on renal pathology ever produced.
